AirTags for Business: What Actually Happens When a Company Tries It

The arithmetic is seductive. Four AirTags cost $99 once, against a fleet platform that wants a per-vehicle rate every month for three years. Somebody in operations does that sum, buys a pack, and the pilot starts on a Monday. It usually ends within a quarter, and rarely for the reason people expect.

The root of it is in the specification rather than the software. Apple lists three connectivity items on AirTag: Bluetooth for proximity finding, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for Precision Finding, and NFC tap for Lost Mode. There is no GPS receiver and no cellular modem. The tag never knows where it is and cannot tell anyone.

What it does instead is broadcast an encrypted identifier and rely on someone else’s Apple device to hear it and report a position. Apple describes that network as reaching more than a billion iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, which is true and is also the whole problem, because those devices are distributed where people are rather than where company assets sit.

What AirTag Genuinely Does Well

It is worth being precise about this, because the device is excellent at its actual job. It is $29 single or $99 for four, runs over a year on a user-replaceable CR2032, is rated IP67 to one metre for thirty minutes, weighs 11.8 grams and measures 31.9mm across and 8mm thick.

Precision Finding gives direction and distance in the last few metres, working with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 and later, and Apple quotes up to 1.5 times the range of the previous generation. For a laptop bag left in a meeting room or a case of samples somewhere in a busy office, nothing else in this price bracket comes close.

There is also a real business-adjacent use that works: luggage and shipped cases moving through airports and depots, where footfall is constant. Apple supports sharing an item’s location with more than fifty airlines. That is a genuine, supported workflow, not a workaround.

Limit One: Coverage Follows People, Not Assets

A fenced compound at 2am has no phones in it. A rural depot has few. A steel container has none inside it. In each case the tag is broadcasting perfectly and nobody is listening, so the app keeps showing the last place a human happened to be, with a timestamp that quietly ages.

This is not a signal-strength problem and no antenna fixes it. It is a population map problem, and it is at its worst precisely where expensive equipment is left unattended, which is the scenario the business was trying to cover.

Limit Two: The Tag Is Designed to Announce Itself

This is the one that ends most deployments and the one nobody anticipates. Apple states that when an unknown AirTag travels with you, your iPhone or Android phone notices and sends an alert, and that if it remains separated from its owner the tag starts playing a sound.

That is correct and important design for a consumer product, and it has real safety value. It also means a tag placed in a service van tells the driver about itself within a day. What follows is a conversation with a driver who believes they were tracked covertly, which is an expensive way to discover that a $25 tag was the wrong tool.

Cellular trackers do not broadcast to nearby phones, so they raise a different set of questions, principally about disclosure and consent, that a business can answer properly in a vehicle policy. The tag removes that option by making the disclosure for you, at the worst possible moment.

Limit Three: Five People, One Consumer Account

Apple states an AirTag can be shared with up to five people. That ceiling is fine for a family and impossible for an operation. A dispatcher, two supervisors, a yard lead and a regional manager is five, before anyone covering a shift.

Underneath that sits a harder issue. The tags belong to an Apple Account, and that account belongs to a person. When the operations coordinator who set everything up leaves, the tags leave with their account. There is no organisational ownership, no role-based access, no offboarding path and no audit of who viewed which asset.

Limit Four: No Alerts, No History, No Export

Business tracking is rarely about looking at a map. It is about being told something: this trailer left the yard outside hours, this generator has not moved in nine days, these twelve items were on site on the fourteenth. That means geofences, rules, notifications and an exportable record.

AirTag has none of that. There is no geofence, no alerting on movement, no reporting, no API and no history to hand an insurer or an auditor. Find My is a finding tool, which is exactly what it says, and a finding tool is not a management system.

The temperature range matters for a narrower set of businesses and is worth knowing: Apple quotes an operating ambient range of minus 4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. A chilled trailer sits inside that. A frozen one at minus 20 Fahrenheit does not.

What the Business Version Actually Looks Like

The interesting thing is that the tag concept survives the criticism intact. Cheap, long-life, battery-powered Bluetooth tags on low-value items are a genuinely good idea. What has to change is the network they report through and the platform they report into.

Two models exist. In the first, the tags report to a cellular device you own, which acts as the reader for everything clustered near it: one data plan covers twenty items, and coverage is wherever you put the reader. In the second, the tags broadcast to a purpose-built terrestrial gateway network instead of a consumer one. GPX’s AssetTag Pro takes the second route, quoting up to three years on a replaceable CR2477 and an IP67 rating, with no SIM in the tag.

Larger platforms sell the first model as an add-on to fleet hardware. Samsara lists an asset tag alongside its unpowered asset gateway, priced into a wider agreement. Neither publishes a per-tag figure, which is the trade you make for everything the consumer product lacks.

Run the Pilot on the Right Assets

If the pilot has already been bought, point it at the things AirTag is good at: cases, bags, kits and tool boxes that move between buildings where staff are. Those will work, and the result will be honest.

Keep it away from vehicles, from anything left in a yard overnight, and from anything an employee carries, because those three will fail for four different reasons and the failure will be read as proof that asset tracking does not work. The tag itself is similar. Everything around it is not.
