Long Battery GPS Trackers: Reading a Ten-Year Claim Properly

Battery life is the specification that decides whether an asset tracking programme survives its second year, and it is the one most often quoted without the number that makes it meaningful. Published claims in this market run from 34 days to 13 years on hardware that is otherwise comparable, across a category growing steadily around unpowered assets.

The spread is not a quality difference. Nearly every long figure in the category is quoted at one position fix every twenty-four hours, and the honest vendors print the reporting interval beside the claim. We checked every device below on its own page on 18 September 2026.

Where this causes real damage is at configuration. A device bought on a five-year claim and set to report every five minutes will be dead inside a season, in a yard nobody visits, and the gap will be discovered the week the machine goes missing.

The Arithmetic Behind a Decade

A cellular position report costs roughly the same energy whether the device does it once a day or once a minute. Waking a GNSS receiver, acquiring satellites, computing a fix, waking a modem and transmitting is the expensive sequence, and everything between those events costs almost nothing.

So the maths is close to linear in reports. A device taking 365 fixes a year lasts about a hundred times longer than one taking 35,000, on the same cell. That is why a 20 Ah battery supports a ten-year claim and a 1500 mAh battery supports three weeks: both figures are honest, and they are answering different questions.

It also explains why the recovery mode exists on every serious device. Dropping to a fix every five minutes for the week an asset is missing costs a few weeks of the budget and buys back the asset, which is a trade worth making once and ruinous as a default.

Read the Footnote, Not the Headline

The longest claim in the category, up to thirteen years on the Verizon Connect EAT-B, carries a footnote stating that battery life assumes optimal conditions. That footnote is doing a lot of work and it is the right thing to ask about in the first call: which conditions, what interval, and what the figure becomes in a cold yard.

Spytec sets the better example by publishing both ends. Stating 365 days at one fix a day and 48 days at an hour of daily movement on minute updates tells a buyer everything they need without a conversation, and makes the device easier to trust rather than harder.

Where no interval is printed at all, treat the number as marketing rather than specification until someone puts a duty cycle beside it.

Replaceable Cells Change the Whole Calculation

A sealed device has a hard end of life. When the cell goes, the unit is scrap, and on a fleet of two hundred trackers that is a replacement programme with a date on it.

A replaceable cell turns the same device into a serviceable asset. GPX states the AssetTrack’s 20 Ah lithium cell is non-rechargeable but replaceable, and Logistimatics states the AssetTrack Mini battery is field-replaceable, which means a technician can do it in a yard rather than shipping units back.

On a ten-year horizon that difference is larger than the price gap between most of these devices, and it rarely appears in a comparison table.

Cold Is the Variable Nobody Budgets For

Lithium cells lose capacity as temperature drops, and published battery claims are not usually quoted at the bottom of the operating range. A device rated to minus 30 Celsius and one rated to minus 20 will behave very differently in a northern yard in January, and the second one is out of specification before it is out of battery.

Both the GPX AssetTrack and the Logistimatics AssetTrack Mini publish a minus 30 Celsius floor. Check that figure against the coldest site you actually operate, not the average, because the failure will happen at the extreme and nobody will be there to see it.

Set the Interval Before You Set the Budget

Decide how stale a position is allowed to be for each class of asset, and write it down before shopping. Once a day covers utilisation, overdue returns and knowing which yard something sits in, which is most of the value. Anything faster is a recovery feature you should be able to switch on rather than a setting you run all year.

How can a tracker run for ten years on one battery?+

By doing almost nothing almost all of the time. The device sleeps, wakes once every twenty-four hours, takes a satellite fix, transmits a short message and sleeps again. A GNSS fix and a cellular transmission are the expensive parts, so a device that performs them 365 times a year rather than 35,000 times lasts roughly a hundred times longer on the same cell.

What happens if I turn the reporting rate up?+

The figure collapses, and vendors that publish both numbers show how far. Spytec states its Atlas XL runs up to 365 days at one fix a day and 48 days if the item moves an hour a day on minute updates. That is the same hardware and the same battery, with an 87 percent reduction from one setting.

Is a replaceable battery better than a sealed one?+

For anything you keep more than a few years, yes. A field-replaceable cell means a five-year device becomes a ten-year device for the price of a battery and a site visit. A sealed device is a disposal at end of life. Check which you are buying, because the specification sheets are not always prominent about it.

Does cold weather change the figure?+

Substantially, and most published claims assume moderate conditions. Lithium chemistry loses capacity as temperature falls, so a yard that reaches minus 25 Celsius will not deliver the number printed on a page written for a temperate climate. Read the stated operating range as well as the battery claim, because devices vary between minus 20 and minus 30.

Which published figure is the longest?+

Verizon Connect quotes up to thirteen years for its battery EAT-B, footnoted as assuming optimal conditions. GPX states up to ten years at one report per day for the AssetTrack. Logistimatics publishes up to five years at the same duty cycle for $54.99. The footnote on the longest claim is doing real work and is worth asking about.
