9 Equipment Tracking Devices for Machines That Sit Still for Months
Plant and equipment are the assets most worth tracking and the hardest to keep tracked. A generator delivered to a site in March and collected in August spends five months with no power supply, no network installed near it, and nobody looking at it. The asset tracking market has grown around that specific gap, and the device category that serves it looks nothing like vehicle telematics.

The pattern that emerges is simple: the useful specification is not accuracy or app quality, it is battery life stated against a reporting interval, plus an IP rating and a temperature range that match the yard the thing actually sits in.
Where this goes wrong is predictable. A fleet-grade real-time device gets fitted to a machine, configured at its default reporting rate, and is flat within a month. Nobody notices because nobody visits, and the first sign of trouble is a gap in the map the week the machine goes missing.

What Actually Kills an Equipment Rollout
- The default reporting interval. A device capable of a fix every five minutes will do exactly that if nobody changes the setting, and a five-year battery becomes a five-week one.
- Buying one device type for everything. An excavator, a generator and a box of hand tools have three different economics. One product line covering all three means overpaying on two of them.
- Mounting where the sky is not. Under a steel canopy or inside a plant cab, a GNSS receiver struggles. Outside skin, roof or an unobstructed flange is the difference between working and silent.
- No plan for the tags when the reader leaves. Tag systems are cheap because they share a data plan. Move the van and the tags go dark, which is fine if expected and alarming if not.
The Multi-Year Cellular Group
GPX states up to ten years at one report per day for the AssetTrack, from an IP67 unit rated minus 30 to 80 Celsius with an anti-tamper sensor, WiFi positioning indoors and a Bluetooth radio that reads nearby tags. That last part is what turns one device into the hub of a site.
Logistimatics publishes the cheapest equivalent at $54.99 with up to five years, the same IP67 and minus 30 rating, 204 grams with the flange, and a field-replaceable cell. Volume pricing runs to $44.99 at twenty units, published rather than negotiated.
Verizon Connect quotes the longest figure in the group at up to thirteen years for the EAT-B, with a footnote that the number assumes optimal conditions. That caveat is doing real work and is worth pressing on.
The Cheap-Per-Item Group
For the long tail of smaller kit, a cellular device per item never pays. GPX’s AssetTag Edge is the shape of the alternative: 6mm thick, 8.5 grams, IP67, Bluetooth 5.0, stated up to four years on a CR2032, with a detection range of about 150 feet outdoors and 75 feet indoors. It needs a reader in range and has no price published.
Azuga sells the same idea as an equipment beacon for small tools alongside its asset trackers. The economics are compelling and the constraint is identical: coverage is wherever your readers are.
Solar, and Why It Is Not a Free Lunch
One Step GPS lists solar trackers for trailers and construction equipment on its flat $13.95 rate. Solar solves the charging problem cleanly on anything that lives in the open, and fails quietly on anything stored under cover, in a container, or through a northern winter with short days and snow on the panel.
It is an excellent answer for yard equipment and a poor one for plant that spends half its life indoors. Match it to where the machine sleeps rather than to where it works.
Cost the Long Tail Before the Headline Assets
Most operations size a tracking programme on the ten machines they would hate to lose, then discover the budget never covered the four hundred smaller items that actually go missing. Work the other way: count the long tail first, because it decides whether you need a tag architecture at all, and a tag architecture decides which cellular device you buy.

Power and duty cycle. A vehicle tracker is wired to a battery that recharges every time the engine runs, so it can report every thirty seconds indefinitely. An equipment tracker usually has no power source at all, so it is designed around a fixed energy budget: a large cell, a slow default reporting interval, and a burst mode reserved for recoveries.
How do I track small tools rather than large plant?+
Not with a cellular device per item, because the subscription would cost more than the tool. The working pattern is a cellular tracker on the van, the container or the machine, and cheap Bluetooth tags on everything that travels with it. The cellular device reads the tags, so twenty items share one data plan. It only works while the tags stay near the reader.
What IP rating does equipment tracking need?+
IP67 is the practical floor for anything living outdoors, meaning dust tight and able to survive immersion to a metre for thirty minutes. Most serious equipment trackers publish IP67 or better. Be careful with sensors rather than trackers: some condition monitors are only IPX4, which is splash resistance, and that is not the same class of protection.
Will a tracker survive a winter outdoors?+
Check the stated operating temperature, not the IP rating. Published ranges vary widely: some devices are rated to minus 30 Celsius and others only to minus 20. A yard that reaches minus 25 will push the second group out of specification exactly when nobody is visiting the site to notice.
Do I need a gateway installed at each site?+
Only for some tag systems. A cellular tracker talks straight to a mobile network and needs nothing. A Bluetooth tag either reports through a cellular device you already own, which is free but means no visibility when that device is elsewhere, or through a wider terrestrial gateway network, where coverage follows gateway density rather than your own kit.
